President Trump Commutes Former Rep. George Santos' Prison Sentence
President Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence of former U.S. Representative George Santos, who was serving over seven years for fraud and identity theft.
President Donald Trump announced on Friday the commutation of former U.S. Representative George Santos' prison sentence. Santos, a New York Republican, had been serving a seven-year term after pleading guilty to fraud and identity theft charges.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump stated, "George Santos was somewhat of a 'rogue,' but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren't forced to serve seven years in prison." He added, "Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!"
Santos began his sentence in July at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey, following his April sentencing. He had admitted to deceiving donors and stealing the identities of 11 individuals, including family members, to make unauthorized contributions to his campaign.
During his incarceration, Santos appealed directly to President Trump, citing his support for the president's agenda and the Republican Party. In an October 13 letter published in The South Shore Press, he wrote, "Sir, I appeal to your sense of justice and humanity... I humbly ask that you consider the unusual pain and hardship of this environment and allow me the opportunity to return to my family, my friends, and my community."
This commutation is part of a series of clemency actions by President Trump for former Republican politicians. In May, he pardoned former U.S. Representative Michael Grimm and former Connecticut Governor John Rowland, both of whom had been convicted on corruption-related charges.
Santos' political career was marked by controversy. After being elected in 2022, it was revealed that he had fabricated significant portions of his biography, including false claims about his education and employment history. These revelations led to his expulsion from the House of Representatives in 2023, making him the sixth member in history to be ousted by colleagues.
In his commutation announcement, President Trump compared Santos' actions to those of Senator Richard Blumenthal, who had previously apologized for misrepresenting his military service. Trump noted, "This is far worse than what George Santos did, and at least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN!"
Santos' release is expected to occur immediately, as per the president's directive.
