Anchorage Establishes Shelters for Western Alaska Storm Evacuees
Anchorage is setting up multiple shelters to accommodate over 1,000 residents displaced by severe storms in Western Alaska.
In response to severe storms that have rendered several Western Alaska communities uninhabitable, Anchorage officials are preparing to shelter more than 1,000 displaced residents. The municipality, in coordination with state agencies and the American Red Cross, is establishing four emergency shelters: the Alaska Airlines Center, the Egan Center, and the Fairview and Spenard recreation centers. Collectively, these facilities can accommodate approximately 1,400 individuals.
Mayor Suzanne LaFrance emphasized the city's commitment to supporting those affected, urging Anchorage residents to welcome evacuees with open arms. She noted that some individuals may need to remain in Anchorage through the winter, as the timeline for returning to their communities remains uncertain. The city is collaborating with state and tribal leaders to explore additional temporary housing options, including hotel accommodations.
The evacuation efforts, described as among the most significant airlift operations in Alaska's history, have already relocated hundreds of residents from storm-damaged villages such as Kipnuk and Kwigillingok. Many evacuees arrived with minimal belongings, some with only the clothes they were wearing. The Alaska National Guard and other agencies continue to coordinate these operations, ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected.
The Alaska Federation of Natives' annual convention, currently underway in Anchorage, has also focused on the storm's impact. Leaders have expressed solidarity with affected communities, organizing donation drives and fundraising efforts to support recovery initiatives. Traditional performances and prayers have been dedicated to those who have suffered losses, highlighting the collective resilience and unity of Alaska's Indigenous peoples.
