Pennsylvania Proceedings for Luigi Mangione Delayed Due to Remote Appearance Refusal
Legal proceedings in Pennsylvania against Luigi Mangione are postponed as he declines remote court appearances while in New York custody.
Legal proceedings in Pennsylvania against Luigi Mangione, accused in the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, have been postponed. A judge ruled that the case will not advance until Mangione, currently held in New York on federal and state charges, can appear in person. Mangione has declined to participate in court proceedings remotely. Federal authorities have not permitted his transfer to Pennsylvania for in-person appearances while his New York cases are ongoing. Consequently, the Pennsylvania case is effectively on hold until the conclusion of his federal trial. The judge has granted Mangione and his defense team 14 days to formally request an in-person hearing or reconsider remote participation. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024, following a five-day manhunt. He faces multiple charges in Pennsylvania, including carrying a firearm without a license, forgery, tampering with records or identification, false identification to law enforcement, and possessing instruments of crime. In New York, he faces additional federal charges, including murder and stalking, which carry the possibility of the death penalty, as well as state charges of murder and weapons offenses related to Thompson's death outside a Manhattan hotel.
