Alaska Villages Devastated by Typhoon Halong's Remnants
Typhoon Halong's remnants have caused severe flooding and destruction in Alaska's Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, displacing over 1,500 residents and prompting urgent rescue and relief efforts.
The remnants of Typhoon Halong have severely impacted Alaska's Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, leading to widespread flooding and destruction in several coastal villages. The storm brought hurricane-force winds and significant storm surges, resulting in the displacement of over 1,500 residents.
In Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, communities with populations of approximately 715 and 380 respectively, homes were swept from their foundations, and infrastructure suffered extensive damage. The U.S. Coast Guard conducted multiple rescue operations, evacuating dozens of residents from these areas. Tragically, at least one person has been confirmed dead, and two others are missing.
The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC) has been actively involved in the relief efforts, dispatching medical teams and supplies to the affected communities. According to YKHC President and CEO Dan Winkelman, "With over 680 people in Kipnuk at the school gym and over 400 people sheltering at the school in Kwigillingok, conditions are expected to worsen in the next few days."
The storm's impact has been exacerbated by the region's remote location and the onset of winter, complicating evacuation and rebuilding efforts. Meteorologist Rick Thoman from the University of Alaska Fairbanks noted that the storm's unusual track and intensity were likely influenced by warmer Pacific Ocean temperatures, a factor associated with human-caused climate change.
State and federal agencies, along with local organizations, are coordinating to provide immediate assistance and plan for long-term recovery. The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center is assisting with search and rescue operations, and the Association of Village Council Presidents has been working "around the clock" in response to the disaster.
The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but the need for housing, medical care, and basic supplies is urgent as the affected communities face a challenging path to recovery.
