Trump Administration Freezes Billions in Federal Grants Amid Government Shutdown
The Trump administration has halted nearly $28 billion in federal grants, primarily affecting projects in Democratic-led areas, during the ongoing government shutdown.
Amid the ongoing government shutdown, the Trump administration has frozen or canceled nearly $28 billion in federal grants allocated to over 200 infrastructure projects, predominantly in Democratic-led cities and states. This includes significant investments in clean energy, electric grid upgrades, and transportation infrastructure in areas such as New York and California.
In New York, approximately $18 billion in federal funding has been halted for major projects like the Second Avenue subway and the Hudson River tunnel, both critical to the region's transit system. Similarly, Chicago faces a pause in $2.1 billion intended for transit upgrades, including an extension into the South Side. The administration cited the need to review contracting policies to ensure decisions were not based on race, diversity, or inclusion.
Additionally, the administration announced the termination of roughly $7.6 billion in grants for 223 energy-related projects across 16 states, 14 of which are led by Democrats. The Department of Energy stated that these projects were deemed "not economically viable" or misaligned with the president's energy policy agenda.
Democratic leaders have criticized these actions, alleging political motivations behind the funding freezes. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described the decision as "lawless, dangerous, destructive, cruel," and "illegal." The White House has not responded to requests for comment.
As the shutdown continues, the administration has indicated potential for further cuts, viewing the closure as an opportunity to reduce federal spending and reallocate resources.
