Dallas ICE Facility Shooting: New Details Emerge on Gunman's Background

Summary

Newly released records provide insight into the background of Joshua Jahn, the gunman who attacked a Dallas ICE facility, revealing his mental health struggles and preparations leading up to the incident.

Newly released records shed light on the background of Joshua Jahn, the 29-year-old gunman who opened fire on a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility on September 24, 2025. Jahn killed two detainees and wounded another before taking his own life.

According to the records, Jahn's parents described him as "completely normal" before he moved to Washington state. Upon returning to Texas several years ago, he believed he had radiation sickness and began wearing cotton gloves to avoid contact with plastic. Approximately a month before the attack, Jahn practiced target shooting with a newly purchased rifle in Oklahoma.

On the day of the shooting, Jahn's parents informed the FBI that he was a "loner" obsessed with artificial intelligence technology. They noted he had not been diagnosed with or treated for any mental or physical disorders. The records also indicate that Jahn legally obtained the bolt-action rifle used in the shooting.

Federal authorities previously stated that Jahn wrote "ANTI-ICE" on a bullet and left handwritten notes indicating his intent to ambush and terrorize ICE agents. The investigation is ongoing as officials seek to understand the motivations behind the attack.

"I can confirm at this time that the FBI is investigating this incident as an act of targeted violence," said Special Agent in Charge Joseph Rothrock of the Dallas FBI Field Office. "Early evidence that we have seen from the rounds that were found near the suspected shooter contain messages that are anti-ICE in nature."
