Comet Lemmon Approaches Earth, Potentially Visible to Naked Eye
Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) is nearing Earth and may become visible without optical aid in October 2025.
Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon), discovered in January 2025 by the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona, is approaching Earth and may become visible to the naked eye in October 2025. The comet is expected to reach its closest point to Earth on October 21, passing within 56 million miles.
As it nears the Sun, Comet Lemmon is anticipated to brighten, potentially reaching an apparent magnitude of 4, making it visible without optical aid under ideal conditions. Its greenish hue is attributed to diatomic carbon in its coma.
For optimal viewing, observers in the Northern Hemisphere should look towards the constellation Lynx just before sunrise or after sunset. The comet will be best visible in late October to early November.
Skywatchers are advised to find dark locations away from city lights and to use binoculars or telescopes to enhance the viewing experience.
