Israel and Hamas Implement Ceasefire as Hostage Release Begins
Israel and Hamas have initiated a ceasefire, with the release of hostages and prisoners underway, marking a significant step toward ending the two-year conflict.
Israel and Hamas have commenced a ceasefire, initiating the release of hostages and prisoners as part of a U.S.-brokered agreement aimed at concluding the two-year conflict. The ceasefire took effect at noon local time, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) partially withdrawing to elevated positions within Gaza, facilitating the movement of civilians toward northern areas of the enclave.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hamas is set to release 48 hostages by Monday at noon, with 20 of them believed to be alive. In exchange, Israel has published a list of 250 Palestinian prisoners slated for release. Among those to be freed is Ahmed Jamal Ahmed Kunbeh, convicted of the 2018 murder of Rabbi Raziel Shevach. His widow, Yael Shevach, expressed her support for the exchange, stating, "If this is the price for hostages to be freed, it has my blessing."
The ceasefire agreement also includes provisions for the reopening of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced that the crossing would reopen on October 14, in coordination with the European Union and the White House, allowing for the movement of people and goods.
In Tel Aviv, families of the hostages gathered in Hostages Square, expressing a mix of anticipation and anxiety. Ofir Braslavski, father of 21-year-old hostage Rom Braslavski, shared his emotions: "We focus on the kiss, the hugs, his smell." He added, "Every second feels like it's lasting forever; we're just waiting for the moment they call us."
The ceasefire and subsequent releases have been met with cautious optimism. While many hope this marks the beginning of the end of hostilities, challenges remain, including discussions on Hamas' disarmament and the governance of Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating, "With God's help, we will bring them all home."
