Democrats Maintain Stance Amid Government Shutdown as Republican Criticism Intensifies
Democrats continue to hold firm on healthcare demands during the ongoing government shutdown, drawing sharp criticism from Republicans.
As the U.S. government shutdown extends into its tenth day, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed confidence in the Democratic Party's position, stating, "Every day gets better for us." Democrats have remained steadfast, demanding concessions on healthcare and other issues before agreeing to reopen the government.
Republican leaders have responded with strong criticism. House Speaker Mike Johnson condemned Schumer's remarks, saying, "What Chuck Schumer is doing right now, it's sickening." The shutdown has led to the closure or reduction of federal agency operations nationwide, affecting hundreds of thousands of employees.
The White House, through Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, has initiated layoffs, though the exact number remains unclear. Schumer accused the administration of deliberately harming workers, stating, "They don't have to do it; they want to. They're callously choosing to hurt people."
The impasse began on October 1 when government funding lapsed. Since then, seven Senate votes have failed to resolve the situation, with both parties blocking each other's proposals. Democrats are leveraging their position to seek extensions of Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, reversal of Medicaid cuts, restoration of funding to public media outlets, and limitations on the administration's ability to reduce spending unilaterally.
Republicans insist on reopening the government before engaging in negotiations. They attribute the Democrats' firm stance to various factors, including pressure from progressive supporters. Johnson suggested that Democratic senators are concerned about potential backlash from upcoming protests, alleging that they are "willing to hold the American people hostage so that they don't have to face an angry mob."
Progressive groups have expressed support for the Democrats' approach. Ezra Levin, co-executive director of Indivisible, noted, "The Democrats... have understood where their folks want them to go, and are actually taking it and fighting back. And it's a sight to see." Levin emphasized the popularity of the Democrats' demands and cautioned against trusting Republicans to honor any agreement.
