Powerful Earthquakes Strike Southern Philippines, Causing Fatalities and Tsunami Warnings
Two significant earthquakes hit the southern Philippines, resulting in at least seven deaths and prompting tsunami warnings.
On October 10, 2025, two powerful earthquakes struck off the southern Philippines, leading to at least seven fatalities and triggering tsunami warnings. The first quake, a magnitude 7.4 event, occurred offshore near Manay town in Davao Oriental province, causing landslides and structural damage. This was followed by a magnitude 6.8 aftershock in the same region hours later.
The initial earthquake resulted in several deaths, including individuals who suffered heart attacks in a hospital and others killed by falling debris and landslides in gold-mining villages. Hundreds were injured, and damage to schools and buildings was reported, including cracks in Davao City's airport, which remained operational.
Authorities issued tsunami warnings, prompting evacuations across six coastal provinces. Although no major waves were ultimately recorded, the warnings were extended to Indonesia's northern Sulawesi and Papua, as well as Palau.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that the situation and damages were being assessed, and emergency response teams were being organized. The Philippines, situated on the seismically active Pacific "Ring of Fire," frequently experiences earthquakes. This incident follows a deadly magnitude 6.9 quake two weeks earlier in Cebu, which killed 72 people.
