Tesla Introduces Lower-Priced Model Y and Model 3 Variants Amid Investor Concerns
Tesla has launched more affordable versions of its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles, but investors express concerns over pricing and market competitiveness.
Tesla has unveiled new, lower-cost versions of its Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan, priced at $39,990 and $36,990 respectively. Despite these reductions, the pricing has not met some investors' expectations, leading to a decline in Tesla's stock value.
The new variants feature a simplified interior, reduced driving range, and fewer amenities compared to their predecessors. For instance, the updated Model Y offers a 321-mile driving range and lacks features such as a panoramic glass roof and a second-row touchscreen. Similarly, the Model 3 has seen reductions in ambient lighting and other features.
Analysts have expressed mixed reactions. Daniel Ives from Wedbush noted disappointment that the new models are only about $5,000 cheaper than the next-level trims. Shawn Campbell of Camelthorn Investments commented, "Longer term, this news doesn’t solve the problem posed by lower cost Chinese competitors in global markets. In my opinion, Tesla needs a sub-30k EV."
Tesla's stock has experienced a decline of over 4% following the announcement. The company continues to face challenges from competitors offering electric vehicles priced below $30,000, particularly in the European market.
The Hold consensus rating on Tesla stock is based on 14 Buys, 13 Holds, and nine Sells. The average TSLA stock price target of $350.58 indicates a downside risk of 19% from current levels. TSLA stock has risen 7.2% year-to-date.
