Federal Agents Shoot Woman in Chicago's Brighton Park Amid Alleged Vehicle Ramming Incident
A woman was shot by federal agents in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood after allegedly ramming a Customs and Border Protection vehicle; she and another individual face charges of assaulting federal officers.
A woman was shot by federal agents in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood on Saturday morning following an alleged vehicle ramming incident. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that agents were "rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars" during patrols in the area of 39th Street and South Kedzie Avenue.
According to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, one of the drivers involved was armed with a semi-automatic weapon, prompting agents to fire "defensive shots." The woman, identified as a U.S. citizen, sustained injuries and transported herself to the hospital for treatment.
The woman and another individual have been charged with "forcibly assaulting, impeding, and interfering with a federal law enforcement officer," as stated by the U.S. Department of Justice. During a detention hearing, the woman's defense attorney contested the government's account, alleging that body-camera footage captures an agent saying, "Do something, bitch," before opening fire.
The incident has intensified tensions in Chicago, with protests erupting in response to the shooting. Governor J.B. Pritzker announced that the Trump administration intends to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard, a move he opposes, stating, "There is no need for military troops on the ground in the State of Illinois."
