WNBA Commissioner Addresses Player Criticisms Amid Aces' Finals Victory
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert responds to player criticisms regarding league leadership and officiating, as the Las Vegas Aces secure a narrow win over the Phoenix Mercury in Game 1 of the Finals.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert addressed recent criticisms from players concerning league leadership and officiating during a press conference in Las Vegas. Engelbert expressed concern over players feeling undervalued, stating,
"I was disheartened to hear that some players feel the league, and me personally, do not care about them or listen to them."
She emphasized the league's commitment to improvement, adding,
"We value feedback, we listen to criticism, we remain committed to engaging in the difficult but necessary conversations that ultimately make us all stronger and better."
This response follows remarks from Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier, who criticized WNBA leadership and Engelbert, describing it as "the worst leadership in the world." Collier highlighted concerns over inconsistent officiating and pay disparities between veteran and new players.
Engelbert announced plans to establish a task force involving players and stakeholders to address officiating standards and ensure player safety. She also refuted specific comments attributed to her by Collier, particularly regarding player compensation and media rights deals.
In Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, the Las Vegas Aces narrowly defeated the Phoenix Mercury 89-86. Mercury forward Kahleah Copper tied a WNBA record by making five three-pointers in the first half. The Aces secured the win after a missed free throw by Mercury's Alyssa Thomas and successful free throws by Jackie Young in the final minute. Dana Evans contributed 21 points off the bench for Las Vegas. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
