Youth-Led Protests in Morocco Escalate, Resulting in Fatalities and Mass Arrests
Morocco's youth-driven demonstrations over public service deficiencies have intensified, leading to two deaths, numerous injuries, and over 400 arrests.
Youth-led protests in Morocco, demanding improved education and healthcare services, have escalated into violent confrontations with security forces. In the town of Lqliaa, near Agadir, two individuals were killed when police opened fire on a group attempting to storm a gendarmerie facility. Authorities stated that the group, armed with knives, set part of the facility and a vehicle on fire, prompting security forces to use firearms in self-defense.
The demonstrations, organized by the anonymous youth movement "GenZ 212" through platforms like TikTok and Discord, began on September 27 with calls for better public services. The protests have since spread to major cities including Salé, Tangier, Marrakech, and several towns in the Souss region. While some demonstrations remained peaceful, others turned violent, involving clashes with police, looting, and arson.
The Moroccan Interior Ministry reported that 263 security personnel and 23 civilians were injured during the unrest, with over 400 individuals arrested, 193 of whom are facing trial. Despite earlier statements from GenZ 212 denouncing violence, the situation marks the most significant unrest in Morocco since the 2016–2017 protests in the Rif region. High youth unemployment and inadequate public services are cited as underlying causes of the discontent.
