Illinois Governor Addresses Deployment of Federal Agents in Chicago Amid Recent Incidents
Governor JB Pritzker is set to discuss the deployment of federal agents in Chicago following recent confrontations, including an incident involving a CBS News reporter and the presence of armed agents downtown.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is scheduled to address the deployment of federal agents in Chicago on Monday, following a series of recent incidents that have raised concerns among local officials and residents.
On Sunday morning, a CBS News Chicago reporter, Asal Rezaei, reported that a federal agent fired a pepper ball at her vehicle outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, a suburb west of Chicago. Rezaei stated that there were no active protests at the time, and she was alone when the incident occurred. She described the experience, noting that the chemical agents entered her car, causing her to feel burning sensations and nausea.
The Broadview Police Department has initiated a criminal investigation into the matter and indicated that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is expected to cooperate.
In a separate incident, federal agents were observed downtown along the Chicago River and on Michigan Avenue on Sunday afternoon. Witnesses reported seeing masked agents carrying long guns and moving among shoppers and tourists. Video footage obtained by CBS News Chicago appeared to show federal agents detaining a woman and her children in front of onlookers during this downtown deployment.
Governor Pritzker has previously criticized the deployment of armed federal agents in Chicago, stating that such actions have no place in the city. He is expected to provide further comments on the situation during his address at 3 p.m. Monday.
