Moldova's Pro-European Party Secures Majority Amid Election Interference Allegations

Summary

Moldova's pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity, led by President Maia Sandu, has secured a majority in the parliamentary elections, amid allegations of Russian interference.

Moldova's pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), led by President Maia Sandu, has secured a majority in the recent parliamentary elections. With 95% of polling stations counted, PAS leads with 48% of the vote. The pro-Russian Patriotic Electoral Bloc follows with 25.6%, while the Russia-friendly Alternativa Bloc and the populist Our Party have 8.3% and 6.3%, respectively. The right-wing Democracy at Home party stands at 5.7%.

The election determines the composition of the 101-seat parliament, after which the president will nominate a new prime minister, subject to parliamentary approval. President Sandu emphasized the significance of the vote, stating it will decide whether Moldova consolidates its democracy and joins the EU or is drawn back into Russia's influence.

The election was overshadowed by allegations of Russian interference. President Sandu claimed that Russia "massively interfered" in the election, aiming to destabilize the country. Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported bomb threats targeting polling stations in Romania, Spain, Italy, and the US. Additionally, police detained three individuals from the pro-Russian breakaway region of Transnistria, suspected of planning mass destabilizations and disorder.

Igor Grosu, leader of PAS, noted that "Russia's attempts to hijack the electoral process have been huge," but state institutions worked to ensure the security and integrity of the voting. Russia has denied meddling in Moldova, dismissing the allegations as "unsubstantiated."

The Moldovan diaspora played a decisive role in the election outcome. In the previous presidential runoff, a record number of 327,000 voters cast ballots abroad, with over 82% favoring Sandu. This trend continued in the parliamentary elections, influencing the pro-European direction of the results.

The election results are seen as pivotal for Moldova's future, determining its path toward European integration or a return to Russian influence.
