Trump Considers Military Deployment to Portland Amid Local Opposition
President Trump is contemplating deploying troops to Portland to protect federal facilities, facing opposition from Oregon officials who assert local authorities can manage public safety.
President Donald Trump is considering deploying military troops to Portland, Oregon, to protect federal facilities, particularly those of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), from groups he describes as "domestic terrorists" such as Antifa.
In a recent interview, Trump stated, "Well, I mean, we're certainly looking at it. You can't have that. We don't want that. They're attacking our ICE facility and they're attacking other federal buildings."
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson have expressed strong opposition to the proposed federal intervention. Kotek emphasized that local authorities are capable of managing public safety, stating, "We can manage our own local public safety needs. There is no insurrection, there is no threat to national security."
Mayor Wilson echoed this sentiment, asserting that the necessary number of troops in Portland is "zero." He added, "This is an American city, we do not need any intervention. This is not a military target."
The Oregon National Guard has reported receiving no official requests for support at this time. A Pentagon spokesperson indicated that the Department of Defense would provide information and updates when available.
Since June 2025, over two dozen individuals have been arrested in connection with protests outside Portland's ICE facility. Most arrests occurred in the first month, with protests generally decreasing in size and confrontation over time. Law enforcement continues to maintain a security presence at the facility.
