Massive Great White Shark 'Contender' Tracked Near North Carolina's Pamlico Sound
A nearly 14-foot, 1,653-pound great white shark named Contender has been tracked near North Carolina's Pamlico Sound, marking a significant point in its northward migration.
A nearly 14-foot-long, 1,653-pound great white shark named Contender has been tracked near North Carolina's Pamlico Sound, a popular area for summer activities. Researchers from OCEARCH, a marine research organization, first tagged Contender in January 2025 off the Florida-Georgia coast. After a period of silence, his tracking signal reappeared on June 7 near Pamlico Sound, indicating his northward migration.
Contender's movements are monitored through OCEARCH's satellite tracking system, which detects signals when the shark's dorsal fin surfaces. At approximately 30 years old, Contender is considered a full-grown male in his prime. The data collected from his tracking provides valuable insights into great white shark migration patterns and behavior.
OCEARCH's research aims to enhance understanding of these apex predators, contributing to conservation efforts and informing policies to protect marine ecosystems. The organization emphasizes the importance of respecting the natural habitats of these creatures and staying informed about their movements to ensure both human and shark safety.
