NATO Scrambles Jets as Russia Launches Major Strikes on Ukraine

Summary

NATO fighter jets were scrambled and air defense units put on high alert in response to a significant Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine.

In the early hours of Sunday, NATO fighter jets were scrambled, and air defense units were placed on high alert following a substantial Russian drone and missile assault on Ukraine. The Polish Operational Command reported that due to Russian long-range aviation activities targeting Ukraine, both Polish and allied aircraft commenced operations within Polish airspace.

The command stated that on-duty fighter pairs were scrambled, and ground-based air defense systems, along with radar reconnaissance, were elevated to the highest readiness level. These measures were described as preventive, aiming to secure airspace and protect citizens, particularly in regions adjacent to the threatened areas.

Among the forces placed on alert were Dutch F-35 stealth fighters and a German Patriot surface-to-air missile system. Additionally, airspace over Lublin and Rzeszow, near the Ukrainian border, was temporarily closed. The alert concluded after approximately three and a half hours, with no reported violations of Polish airspace.

The Russian strikes primarily targeted Kyiv, with additional attacks reported in Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, and Odesa. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that the barrage lasted over 12 hours. Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched 593 drones and 50 missiles of various types, marking the largest combined strike on Ukraine since September 7. Defenders managed to down or suppress 566 drones and 45 missiles; however, five missiles and 31 drones impacted 16 locations.

In Kyiv, at least four people, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed, and 27 others were injured. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a five-story apartment building in the Solomyanskyi district was partially destroyed and caught fire. Strikes also affected a state medical facility, warehouses, private homes, cars, and a children's educational center.

In Zaporizhzhia, at least 27 people, including three children, were injured. A high-rise apartment building and several other structures were hit and set ablaze. The city, located approximately 16 miles from the front line, continues to experience continuous Russian attacks.

President Zelenskyy noted that the attack occurred at the end of a week of high-level meetings and speeches at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He stated that Moscow's actions demonstrate its desire to continue fighting and killing, warranting the harshest pressure from the international community. Zelenskyy also called for more international measures to restrict Russia's energy export industry, expressing hope for a strong response from the U.S., Europe, the G7, and the G20.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Counter-Disinformation Center under Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, described the night as difficult for many cities and indicated that the level of attacks on Russian targets would only increase.

Russia's Defense Ministry reported that its forces shot down at least 41 Ukrainian drones overnight. The federal air transport agency, Rosaviatsiya, imposed temporary flight restrictions at multiple airports, including Zhukovsky International Airport in Moscow, as well as airports in Volgograd, Kaluga, Penza, Samara, Pskov, and Yaroslavl.
