Ukrainian Drone Strike Targets Russian Oil Facility Amid Fuel Shortages
A Ukrainian drone strike on a Russian oil pumping station has intensified fuel shortages in Russia and occupied Ukraine, leading to operational suspensions and rising gasoline prices.
A Ukrainian drone strike targeted the Tyngovatovo Oil Pumping Station in Konar, Chuvash Republic, approximately 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, on September 27. Sources from the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) reported that the attack caused a fire, leading to the suspension of oil transportation through the facility. Chuvash Republic Head Oleg Nikolaev confirmed the attempted drone strike, acknowledging minor damage and the halt of operations.
This incident has exacerbated existing gasoline shortages in Russia and occupied Ukrainian territories. On September 26, Lipetsk Oblast Governor Igor Artamonov urged residents to remain calm amid reports of fuel shortages, attributing them to logistical challenges at refineries. The Russian opposition outlet Astra reported that residents in Lipetsk Oblast are facing high prices for AI-95 gasoline, with costs reaching approximately $3.70 per gallon. Historically, the Russian government has used subsidies to stabilize domestic gas prices, but recent Ukrainian drone strikes have complicated these efforts. The average gasoline price in Russia was about $2.15 per gallon in September 2023 and $2.40 per gallon in September 2024, remaining below $3.00 per gallon since February 2023.
A Kremlin-affiliated military blogger noted that Ukrainian strikes on the Russian oil industry are having limited yet painful consequences, with fuel shortages particularly severe in the Far East, frontline areas of Belgorod Oblast, and occupied Crimea, which relies entirely on external oil supplies. The blogger also claimed that gas prices are significantly increasing in Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov, Lipetsk, and Tula oblasts, as well as in Krasnodar and Stavropol krais.
