Des Moines Schools Superintendent Detained by ICE for Immigration Violations
Dr. Ian Roberts, Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, was detained by ICE agents for alleged immigration violations and possession of a loaded handgun.
Dr. Ian Roberts, Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Friday morning. ICE officials stated that Roberts, originally from Guyana, entered the U.S. on a student visa in 1999 and was subject to a final removal order issued in 2024. He was reportedly in the country without work authorization and had a prior weapons charge from 2020.
According to ICE, Roberts was approached during a targeted operation while driving a school-issued vehicle. After identifying himself, he allegedly fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle near a wooded area. The Iowa State Patrol assisted in locating and apprehending him. At the time of his arrest, Roberts was found in possession of a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash, and a fixed-blade hunting knife.
Des Moines Public Schools Board President Jackie Norris expressed surprise at the arrest, noting that the district was unaware of the details surrounding Roberts' immigration status. She emphasized that Roberts had been an integral part of the community since his appointment in July 2023.
Governor Kim Reynolds commented on the situation, stating that while the arrest was shocking, laws must be enforced. She highlighted the importance of upholding immigration laws to protect communities.
In response to the arrest, Associate Superintendent Matt Smith has been appointed as interim superintendent to ensure the district's continued operations.
