Jack Campbell placed on injured reserve as Lions prepare for Week 9

Summary

Linebacker Jack Campbell remains hospitalized but is showing progress in his recovery after a neck injury, and the Detroit Lions have placed him on injured reserve ahead of their game against the Miami Dolphins.

The Detroit Lions entered Week 9 without linebacker Jack Campbell, who suffered a neck injury during the team's Week 8 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Campbell was taken off the field on a backboard and transported to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

In a statement released on Nov. 4, Campbell said he has full movement in his lower body and is making progress with upper-body movement. He thanked the medical staff and expressed optimism about his recovery.

The Lions announced on Nov. 7 that Campbell has been placed on injured reserve, indicating he will miss the upcoming contest against the Miami Dolphins. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard and several teammates wore Campbell’s No. 46 jersey in his honor at Hard Rock Stadium.

Coach Dan Campbell said the team continues to receive updates on Campbell’s condition through the captains and emphasized the importance of keeping players focused on the game. "The good news is he is improving," he said.

CBS Sports reporter Melanie Collins noted that Campbell remains hospitalized but is improving, and that he does not want sympathy, only a return to the field.

Medical experts cited the possibility of central-cord syndrome, an incomplete spinal-cord injury, as a potential diagnosis. Neurosurgeon Dr. Betsy Grunch said recovery could be possible if the condition is confirmed.

Campbell, a 26-year-old fourth-year linebacker drafted in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, was named a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection last season. The Lions signed him to a four-year, $81 million extension on May 21, 2026.
