Indian stock exchanges schedule special Muhurat trading on Nov 8 and close on Nov 10 for Diwali
BSE and NSE will hold a one-hour Muhurat trading session on Sunday, Nov 8, and will be closed on Tuesday, Nov 10, for the Diwali-Balipratipada holiday.
India's major stock exchanges will conduct a special Muhurat Trading session on Sunday, November 8, from 2:20 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., despite the regular market holiday. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed on Tuesday, November 10, for Diwali-Balipratipada, the fourth day of the Diwali festival.
For the Muhurat session, order entry will open at 2:05 p.m., with limit and market orders accepted until 2:10 p.m. Only limit orders may be placed between 2:10 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., followed by order matching from 2:15 p.m. to 2:17 p.m. Continuous trading will then run until 3:30 p.m., after which closing-auction procedures will begin. In the commodity segment, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will hold its special session from 2:05 p.m. to 2:19 p.m., with trading aligning with the stock exchanges from 2:20 p.m. onward.
The Muhurat Trading tradition, started by BSE in 1957 and adopted by NSE in 1992, coincides with Lakshmi Puja, when investors perform rituals seeking prosperity before placing trades. This year’s schedule follows a calendar that already includes 13 of the 16 planned market holidays for 2026, such as Good Friday, Ambedkar Jayanti, Maharashtra Day, and Ganesh Chaturthi. After the Diwali closure, the exchanges will observe additional holidays on November 24 for Guru Nanak Dev Jayanthi and December 25 for Christmas.
"Muhurat Trading provides a symbolic start to the financial year and allows investors to participate in a culturally significant session," a spokesperson for the exchanges said.
