Officials clarified that the extra two-year engagement is limited to nine existing batches, while recruits joining after December 2026 will continue under the original four-year scheme.
New Delhi – Defence officials said the latest amendment to the Agnipath scheme will apply only to the nine batches of Agniveers already in service. The change, announced by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, introduces a second two-year engagement for the 75% of each batch who would otherwise have exited after the initial four years, enabling them to enter the regular cadre after six years if they meet fitness and disciplinary requirements.
Under the existing rules, the first 25% of each batch are absorbed into the regular cadre after four years. That provision remains unchanged. The new provision lifts the previous ceiling on second-group absorption, but entry is not automatic; candidates must opt in, pass medical checks and maintain a clean record.
The ministry said that soldiers who complete the extra two-year period will rank alongside their batchmates who joined the regular force at the four-year point, ensuring that they do not lose seniority relative to later batches.
The government emphasized that the four-year term and the 25% absorption quota are unchanged, describing the move as an "additional engagement period" rather than a redesign of the recruitment model. For individuals inducted after December 2026, the original four-year engagement will continue, with future rules to be reviewed based on the armed forces' needs.
The clarification is intended to address concerns that the scheme was being permanently shifted to a six-year model, confirming that the extension applies only to those currently serving.
