House Republicans Block Vote on Releasing Epstein Case Files
House Republicans have blocked a Democratic-led effort to release government files related to Jeffrey Epstein, citing concerns over victim privacy and ongoing investigations.
House Republicans have blocked a Democratic-led effort to release government files related to Jeffrey Epstein, citing concerns over victim privacy and ongoing investigations.
The move comes as Representatives Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) announced they had secured the necessary 218 signatures to force a floor vote on the matter. Their petition aims to compel the release of all unclassified records pertaining to Epstein within 30 days.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed reservations about the petition, stating that it does not adequately protect victims' personal information. He emphasized the need to balance transparency with the protection of innocent individuals.
In response to the petition, GOP leaders are reportedly pressuring some Republican signatories to withdraw their support, which would prevent the vote from taking place. Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO), however, has stated she will not remove her name from the petition.
The House Oversight Committee is currently conducting its own investigation into the Epstein case. Johnson has suggested that a full House vote is unnecessary while this inquiry is ongoing.
While the effort to release the Epstein files has garnered bipartisan support, it faces significant challenges. Even if the measure passes the House, it is expected to encounter obstacles in the Senate, where similar efforts have been defeated.
