Former FBI Director James Comey Faces Imminent Indictment for Alleged False Testimony
James Comey is expected to be indicted in Virginia on charges of lying to Congress about authorizing a media leak, following the appointment of a new U.S. Attorney.
Former FBI Director James Comey is anticipated to face indictment in the Eastern District of Virginia in the coming days, according to reports from MSNBC. The charges are expected to include allegations that Comey provided false testimony to Congress regarding his authorization of a media leak during his September 30, 2020, testimony.
This development follows the recent resignation of Erik Siebert, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, who stepped down after reportedly opposing the filing of charges against Comey. Siebert's departure led to the appointment of Lindsey Halligan, a former personal attorney to President Donald Trump, as the interim U.S. Attorney. Halligan's appointment has raised concerns among former federal prosecutors due to her limited prosecutorial experience.
The investigation centers on Comey's 2020 congressional testimony, where he denied authorizing leaks related to the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The statute of limitations for the alleged offense is set to expire next week, adding urgency to the proceedings.
President Trump has publicly expressed his desire for legal action against Comey, as well as other political figures such as New York Attorney General Letitia James and Senator Adam Schiff. In a recent social media post, Trump stated, "We can't delay any longer, it's killing our reputation and credibility".
The Justice Department has not yet commented on the impending indictment. Comey's legal representatives have also not provided a statement regarding the matter.
