European Markets Decline Amid Defense Sector Gains Following U.S. Support for Ukraine
European stock markets edged lower on Wednesday, with defense stocks rising after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for Ukraine's territorial integrity.
European stock markets experienced a slight decline on Wednesday morning, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 index down 0.3% by 9:45 a.m. in London. Most sectors traded in negative territory, though defense stocks bucked the trend. The Stoxx Europe Aerospace and Defense Index rose by 1.4%, with Sweden's Saab and Germany's Hensoldt each gaining 5%, and Germany's Renk up 4.6%.
The uptick in defense equities followed U.S. President Donald Trump's comments on the Ukraine conflict. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, "I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form." He added that with time, patience, and financial support from Europe and NATO, restoring Ukraine's original borders is "very much an option."
Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, where he also expressed support for NATO members shooting down any Russian aircraft that breach their airspace.
Global markets were also affected by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's remarks on Tuesday, indicating that asset prices, including equities, were trading at inflated levels. Powell noted, "By many measures, for example, equity prices are fairly highly valued." Overnight in Asia, shares broadly moved lower, while U.S. stock futures remained flat in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
