Lions linebacker Jack Campbell reports progress after neck injury

Summary

Jack Campbell said he has regained full movement in his lower body and is making strides in upper-body mobility following a serious neck injury sustained on Nov. 1.

Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell announced on Wednesday that he has full movement in his lower body and continues to improve mobility in his upper body after a neck injury that required him to be taken to the hospital during the team’s 19-15 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 1.

In a statement released through the team, Campbell thanked the medical staff, trainers, teammates and fans for their support and expressed optimism about his recovery, saying he is taking the process one day at a time.

"My family and I want to sincerely thank everyone for the love, prayers and support we’ve received over the past few days. I’m incredibly encouraged by the progress I’ve made in such a short period of time. I have full movement in my lower body, and I’m continuing to make progress with movement in my upper body. I know there’s still work ahead, but I remain very optimistic," the statement read.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell said hearing the player’s own words about his condition was encouraging and noted that the medical status is being updated regularly.

"Because at this point, that’s all you’re looking for – to know that he’s improving. The status is changing every eight or ten hours in a good way, and that helps," Dan Campbell told reporters.

The team confirmed that Campbell remains in the hospital for continued evaluation and monitoring, and that his teammates have visited him. The Lions are scheduled to play the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium later this week, with the coaching staff emphasizing the need to stay focused on the upcoming game while supporting Campbell’s recovery.
