Moldovan President Accuses Russia of Election Interference Amid Arrests
Moldovan President Maia Sandu alleges Russian-backed efforts to destabilize the country ahead of parliamentary elections, following the arrest of dozens accused of plotting violent unrest.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has accused Russia of attempting to destabilize the nation ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. This follows the arrest of 74 individuals allegedly involved in a plot to incite violent unrest, with some reportedly trained in Serbia by Russian instructors. Authorities confiscated weapons and explosives during nationwide raids.
Addressing the nation, President Sandu stated that the Kremlin is investing heavily to foment violence and spread disinformation. She emphasized Moldova's sovereignty, declaring, "But Moldova is our home. And our home is not for sale."
Pro-Russian parties have countered these allegations, accusing Sandu of using the arrests to intimidate opposition and influence the election outcome. The upcoming vote is seen as pivotal, with pro-Russian forces challenging the pro-European Union stance of Sandu's Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS).
Moldova, which declared independence over 30 years ago, has a significant Russian-speaking population and the breakaway region of Transnistria, supported by Moscow. Under Sandu's leadership, the country has pursued EU membership, holding a referendum last year that narrowly passed, despite evidence of Russian interference, including vote-buying and disinformation campaigns.
International observers have noted concerns about foreign interference in Moldova's elections. The European Parliament highlighted Russia's persistent efforts to influence and undermine free elections through tactics like disinformation and illicit financing of political actors. The Atlantic Council reported escalating Russian interference as Moldova approaches a crucial geopolitical crossroads, with allegations of Kremlin cyberattacks and propaganda aimed at influencing the upcoming vote.
President Sandu has called for a high voter turnout, especially among the diaspora, to counteract these destabilizing efforts and maintain Moldova's pro-European trajectory.
