US Midterm Results Prompt Oil Price Volatility and Strengthen Indian Rupee
Early US midterm outcomes align with Democratic gains, prompting crude price swings and a modest rise in the Indian rupee as markets assess policy implications.
Early returns from the United States midterm elections are matching exit-poll projections that anticipate Democratic gains in Congress, which could limit President Donald Trump’s policy options for the remainder of his term.
The developing results have sparked volatility in crude markets, with West Texas Intermediate trading near $95 a barrel and Brent hovering above $106. Analysts say that a shift in congressional control could influence oil pricing in the days ahead.
The ongoing US-Israeli military actions against Iran, which began in late February, have been a key driver of higher oil prices. A Democratic majority in the Senate or both chambers is expected to increase pressure on the administration to seek a diplomatic resolution and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, potentially easing supply constraints.
In India, the rupee edged higher as investors awaited the US vote. The currency closed at 94.74 per dollar, up from 94.90 the previous day, after briefly reaching 94.62 in early trade. The dollar index remained steady at 101.7, while forward premiums slipped modestly, reflecting cautious market sentiment.
