London mayor praises Democratic victories in US midterms

Résumé

Sadiq Khan congratulated US Democrats on winning control of Congress, describing the result as a rejection of Donald Trump's politics, while UK officials said the shift would not affect bilateral relations.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan used his X account to commend the Democratic Party after it secured majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the recent US midterm elections. He said the victories reflected a "focus on hope, unity and supporting families with the cost of living" and described them as a "true rejection of the damaging and divisive politics of Donald Trump."

UK Health Minister James Frith told Times Radio that the election results represented a "seismic shift" in American domestic politics but emphasized that the United Kingdom would maintain its "excellent relationship" with the Trump administration. He noted that the Prime Minister had already engaged constructively with President Trump during a White House visit and phone calls, and that this approach would continue.

Democratic candidates highlighted the wins as evidence of public opposition to the president’s agenda, with Georgia Senate candidate Jon Ossoff stating that the American people had rejected the "failed lame-duck president Donald J. Trump." The party’s gains included Senate seats in traditionally Republican states such as Texas, Kansas and South Carolina, and a reclaimed House majority after flipping seats in Kentucky, New Jersey, Indiana and North Carolina.

President Trump, who was not on the ballot, posted on Truth Social that the party would have won "in a landslide" had he been a candidate, and later told Fox News that the results surprised him despite strong rallies. He also indicated a willingness to work with opponents while signaling potential use of his veto power on forthcoming legislation.
