Republicans Cite President Trump’s Focus as Factor in Midterm Losses

Party operatives and strategists told the BBC that President Trump’s policy priorities and campaign style contributed to the Republican defeat in the 2026 midterm elections.

Republican officials and campaign staff said President Trump’s emphasis on his legacy and a series of policy decisions hurt the party’s performance in the 2026 midterms.

"It's on him. It's not on anybody else. It's a total, complete rejection of President Trump," said Bill Miller, a Texas Republican lobbyist, describing the outcome as a major setback.

Other strategists, including Gregg Peppin of Minnesota, argued that voters reacted negatively to the president’s policies, noting a pattern of “one mistake after another” across several states.

A White House ally linked public disapproval of the administration’s stance on the Iran conflict, tariffs and immigration enforcement to a “perfect storm” that amplified frustration within the party.

Despite the losses, some party members cautioned against attributing the defeat solely to President Trump. Steve Scheffler, the Republican National Committeeman from Iowa, said the president’s influence remains strong, though “there were things you wish he said differently.”

President Trump posted on Truth Social after the results, claiming a hypothetical victory if he had been on the ballot, and later told media outlets he would accept the outcome.

Analysts noted that midterm elections historically favor the party out of power, and the Democratic gains in the House, Senate and statewide races marked a shift in several traditionally Republican states.

Within the party, opinions diverged on campaign strategy. Krish Mathrani, youth chair of the Michigan Republican Party, praised Trump’s rallies for energizing voters, while others pointed to weak Republican candidates in key battlegrounds.

The Republican midterm convention in Dallas, dominated by President Trump’s keynote address, drew limited viewership and was described by a Texas Democratic Party official as ineffective.

Looking ahead, party officials such as Scheffler and strategist Peppin said the GOP will need to reassess its direction and consider new leadership for the 2028 election cycle.
