Democrats Secure Senate Majority and House Gains in 2026 Midterms

Democrats flipped seven Senate seats and captured a sizable House majority, giving them control of Congress as President Trump acknowledges the results.

Democrats won control of the Senate and are on track for a large House majority after the 2026 midterm elections, overturning Republican expectations in several key states. The party secured seven Senate pickups, including Michigan’s first Muslim senator, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, and victories in traditionally Republican states such as Texas, Kansas and South Carolina. In the House, Democrats flipped districts in North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas and other battlegrounds, despite Republican redistricting efforts.

"The American people have spoken and made clear they’ve had enough of the extremism, enough of the corruption," Representative Hakeem Jeffries said after the results were projected.

President Trump, who repeatedly criticized El-Sayed during the campaign, told The New York Times he would accept the outcome and emphasized his veto power over legislation. Senate leader Chuck Schumer pledged swift action, stating, "Relief is on the way."

The election outcomes reflect voter concerns over rising economic costs, the war in Iran, and perceived corruption, leading to a broad repudiation of the Republican agenda. Democrats plan to use their new committee control to investigate the administration and advance legislation on health-care subsidies, Medicaid funding and tariff reforms.

Republican leaders, including Senate Minority Leader John Thune, warned of continued opposition, citing the president’s support as a bulwark against what they described as "Democrat extremism."
