Democrats Gain Control of House and Senate in 2026 Midterm Elections

Ամփոփում

The 2026 midterm elections resulted in Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress, while President Donald Trump acknowledged the outcome and discussed factors influencing Republican losses.

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Senate race, defeating Republican incumbent Mike Rogers. After the victory was called, El-Sayed thanked voters, saying, "You chose hope and we hope never to see the likes of you in this state again."

President Donald Trump used legal challenges to influence state election procedures, but courts rejected the efforts. The Justice Department’s lawsuit in Alaska concerning candidate name confusion was dismissed, and an investigation into Democratic campaign activities was publicized.

The election produced a Democratic majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, giving the party control of Congress for the first time in this election cycle. The party’s gains exceeded expectations, with notable Senate victories in Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become the first Black Speaker of the House when the new Congress convenes on January 3. Former President Barack Obama praised the results, noting that voters sought unity and practical solutions.

In an interview with Fox News, President Trump attributed Republican losses primarily to higher gasoline prices rather than the war in Iran, stating, "People agree with what I’m doing on Iran, but they weren’t willing to pay more for gasoline."

Trump also expressed surprise at the scale of the defeats, commenting that he had expected better performance from Republicans. He later indicated a willingness to accept the election results and work with Democrats, as reported in a New York Times interview.
