NATO Warns Russia Over Airspace Violations in Eastern Europe
NATO has cautioned Russia against repeated airspace violations over member states, emphasizing its commitment to defend alliance territory.
NATO has issued a warning to Russia following a series of airspace violations over alliance member states in Eastern Europe. The alliance emphasized its commitment to defend its territory, stating it will employ all necessary measures in accordance with international law.
The warning comes after incidents involving Russian military aircraft entering the airspace of Estonia, Poland, and Romania. In Estonia, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets reportedly entered the country's airspace for over 10 minutes before being confronted and forced to retreat. Poland and Romania have also reported Russian drones entering their airspace, raising concerns about regional security.
In response to these violations, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the alliance's commitment to Article 5 is ironclad, referring to the provision in NATO's founding treaty that commits all member states to mutual defense in the event of an attack on any one of them. He added that such actions are escalatory, risk miscalculation, and endanger lives, and they must stop.
Additionally, large drones were observed over airports in Copenhagen and Oslo, leading to temporary closures. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the incident as the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date. While authorities have not yet identified a culprit, the scale of the attack suggests a capable actor, and Frederiksen noted that Russian involvement could not be ruled out.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store reported that Russia has violated Norwegian airspace on three occasions this year, involving Russian fighter jets spotted on Norway's side of their shared border. He stated that regardless of the cause, such violations are not acceptable.
NATO's warning underscores the alliance's readiness to defend its members against any threats and calls on Russia to cease its airspace violations to prevent further escalation.
