Summary

Incumbent Democrat Jon Ossoff won a second term in the U.S. Senate, edging out Republican Mike Collins in Georgia as Democrats clung to a seat in a state President Donald Trump carried in 2024.

Incumbent Democrat Jon Ossoff was re-elected Tuesday to a second term in the U.S. Senate, defeating Republican Representative Mike Collins and holding onto a major Democratic seat in a state President Donald Trump carried in 2024. Ossoff, 39, ran a campaign centered on nonstop attacks on President Trump and raised more than $100 million, prompting speculation about whether he is positioning himself for a future presidential bid.

"Corruption in American politics runs a lot deeper than Donald Trump," Ossoff said during the campaign. "It's not just the money that's corrupted our politics. It is a moral corruption, the cynical indifference of powerful people."

Ossoff highlighted his legislative priorities, including proposals to bar members of Congress from trading individual stocks and a constitutional amendment to limit corporate money in campaigns. He also advocated for ending the war in Iran, rolling back several of President Trump's tax cuts, and reducing tariffs.

Collins, who received an endorsement from President Trump, struggled to raise funds and faced criticism over past social-media posts and alleged ties to white-nationalist figures.

"Whatever Donald Trump says, Mike Collins does," Ossoff said in a debate. "Doesn't matter what it is. Doesn't think for himself."

The race featured sharp contrasts on issues such as immigration, transgender athletes in sports, and support for Israel. Ossoff noted his support for Israel's security while calling for accountability regarding alleged violations of international law in Gaza, leaving the determination of genocide charges to the International Criminal Court.

Local Republican officials praised Ossoff for securing federal funding for hurricane relief and infrastructure projects in Georgia. The victory preserves Democratic control of the Senate seat as the chamber enters the final years of President Trump's administration.
