Nanaimo Clippers terminate contract with executive arrested on child sexual exploitation charges

Summary

The junior hockey club said it was unaware of the investigation when it hired Tyler King and has now ended his employment following his arrest at a border crossing.

The Nanaimo Clippers announced that it has ended its relationship with Tyler King, a 39-year-old executive who was arrested on Friday at a Canada-U.S. border crossing on child sexual exploitation charges. The club said the decision was not a judgment on the merits of the allegations and noted that the reported conduct did not occur during his brief tenure with the team.

"The allegations reported do not relate to his time with the Clippers. Given the timing of his employment, King had no contact with any of our players," the statement read.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) disclosed that the investigation into King began in 2024, coinciding with his departure from the Okotoks Oilers, another BC Hockey League team. An Okotoks Oilers employee had reported that a former staff member was soliciting and compensating players for intimate images, leading to the identification of multiple underage victims from Saskatchewan and Alberta.

King later worked with the Clippers and taught sports journalism at a university in New York state. He also held a part-time role with the AHL’s Belleville Senators on game nights, a position he will not resume while the investigation proceeds.

He faces three charges: luring a person under 18, sexual exploitation of a young person and making child pornography. Police said the number of potential victims is still being determined and asked anyone with information to contact authorities.
