Toronto police investigate needles found in Halloween candy

Summary

Police in Toronto issued a safety alert after two separate reports of sewing needles and pins discovered in individually wrapped Halloween treats, with no injuries reported.

Toronto police have issued a public safety alert after receiving two reports of foreign objects found in Halloween candy in the city’s east end. Investigators said the items were discovered in pre-wrapped treats collected during Saturday evening trick-or-treating.

One incident involved a sewing needle and a pin found in separate treats near Main Street and Swanwick Avenue. A second incident, near Gerrard Street East and Jones Avenue, yielded two pins in two individually wrapped candies. No injuries were reported and the candies had not been consumed.

Barry Horn, a Toronto resident, told CP24 that his son found a needle inside a Kit Kat bar while checking his children’s candy on Sunday morning.

"My son opened up a Kit Kat and broke it open and found a needle inside it, like a sewing needle," Horn said.

A police spokesperson advised residents to inspect collected candy carefully and contact police if anything unusual is found. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said it had not received any reports related to the incidents and noted that suspected tampering with Halloween candy is rare. The agency recommended preserving any suspicious candy, foreign object, and original packaging for investigation.
