Multiple Bomb Threats Disrupt Flights and Cruise Ship in Europe

Summary

On Tuesday, bomb threats affected at least seven flights and a cruise ship in Europe, leading to temporary disruptions at several airports, though no explosives were found.

On November 3, multiple bomb threats targeting at least seven flights and a cruise ship caused significant disruptions across European airports. The threats involved flights to Warsaw, Sofia, Rome, and Murcia, with authorities confirming that no explosive devices were discovered during inspections.

Rhys Jones, Analysis Output Manager at Osprey Flight Solutions, noted that the occurrence of seven confirmed bomb threats in a single day is unusual, suggesting that the intent was to disrupt aviation operations rather than target specific flights. One flight from London to Warsaw was diverted to Modlin airport, which was temporarily closed for a search, while another flight from Copenhagen landed safely at Chopin airport in Warsaw.

In Sofia, two flights from Milan and Dublin were also threatened but landed without incident. The Bulgarian transport ministry confirmed that both flights were cleared after inspections. Additionally, a Ryanair flight from Manchester to Murcia prompted a security response, but the threat was later deemed a hoax.

Authorities have not attributed blame for the threats, which come amid heightened tensions in Europe. Eric Schouten, head of the aviation security group Dyami, remarked that the situation aligns with concerns over potential hybrid attacks attributed to state actors, although both Russia and Iran have denied involvement.
