Summary

The BJP hit back at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi after he alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains in power with foreign assistance, with BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan resorting to insults, dredging up Gandhi’s London remarks from March 2023, and trying to turn legitimate questions about overseas influence into a security scare.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reacted aggressively to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's accusation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains in power with foreign assistance. BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan branded Gandhi a "con artist" and claimed his remarks would rebound on him, pointing to Gandhi's speech in London in March 2023, where he said India's democratic problems were not only an Indian issue.

Kesavan shared an archival video of Gandhi's London address, in which Gandhi asked why Western democracies seemed indifferent to the perceived erosion of democracy in India. The spokesperson also tried to link the Congress leadership to the Forum of Democratic Leaders in the Asia-Pacific, alleging ties to funding from George Soros' foundation and to earlier support for separatist activity in Jammu and Kashmir.

Further, Kesavan drew attention to Gandhi's interactions with U.S. short-seller Hindenburg Research and German academic Cornelia Woll, and claimed they had links to organizations funded by Soros. He questioned the frequency and transparency of Gandhi's foreign trips, casting them as a national-security issue because Gandhi serves as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Gandhi had earlier posted on X, challenging the government to hold a public debate over the alleged foreign influence on Modi's administration. Prime Minister Modi, in a recent speech, warned of "obstructionist forces" that he said were trying to divide the country and damage India's image abroad.
