Former Okotoks Oilers assistant GM charged with child sexual exploitation

Summary

Former Okotoks Oilers assistant general manager Tyler King was arrested on charges of sexual exploitation of minors after an RCMP investigation identified three victims.

Tyler King, 39, who served as assistant general manager of the Junior A Okotoks Oilers from 2021 until his resignation in 2024, was arrested in Ontario while crossing the border from New York. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police allege he solicited and paid three minors from Alberta and Saskatchewan for intimate videos and photographs in 2024.

The investigation began after a tip from another employee of the team. Brent Lauinger, chairman and governor of the Oilers, said the organization was unaware of the allegations while King was employed and that it "reviewed it carefully and passed it to the RCMP." He added that the club is cooperating fully with law enforcement.

At the time of his arrest, King was employed as a communications professor at SUNY Oswego in New York. The university issued a statement confirming awareness of the arrest and said it is coordinating with police, emphasizing that student safety and well-being remain its top priority.

RCMP Corporal Dan Campbell urged any minors who have experienced abuse to contact a trusted adult, parent or police, stressing that they will be supported without fear of blame or judgment.
