British adventurer Karl Bushby completes 28-year walk from Chile to Hull

Summary

After setting out in 1998, former paratrooper Karl Bushby reached his childhood home in Hull, ending a 28-year trek across continents.

British adventurer Karl Bushby arrived at his childhood home in Hull, concluding a walk that began in Punta Arenas, Chile, in November 1998. The journey, which spanned 28 years and crossed multiple continents, was undertaken on foot with a trolley carrying his possessions.

Bushby, a former paratrooper, said the experience allowed him to see the world in detail, noting that he learned about local food and customs by living among the people he met rather than through tourism. He described the trek as a test of tenacity and an eye-opener to the generosity of strangers.

"Tenacity is emperor," Bushby said when asked about the biggest lesson from his journey.

His parents recalled their reaction when he first announced the plan. His mother, Angela, said she was surprised by his determination, while his father, Keith, a former SAS soldier, supported the idea.

During the walk, Bushby delivered a postcard that had been given to him by an Austrian expatriate in Chile, Michael Bier, promising to forward it to a friend in Vienna. He fulfilled the promise just before crossing from Hungary into Austria.

The conclusion of the trek raises questions about Bushby's next steps, as he transitions from a life defined by constant movement to reintegrating into settled society.
