South Carolina Senate Race Tightens Amid War-Related Cost Concerns

Résumé

Incumbent Republican Darline Graham and Democrat Annie Andrews are tied in recent polls as the South Carolina Senate contest becomes competitive, with President Donald Trump campaigning multiple times in the state.

Incumbent Republican Senator Darline Graham and Democratic challenger Annie Andrews are dead-locked at 48 percent in the latest poll, according to a recent New York Times survey, with Fox News reporting a similar tie. The close race marks a rare competitive Senate contest in a state that has not elected a Democrat to the chamber this century.

The campaign has drawn heightened attention as President Donald Trump has visited South Carolina three times in recent weeks, an unusual level of involvement for a sitting president in a Senate race. Former Governor Mark Sanford described the situation as “absurd” and suggested the race should have been a “shoe-in” for Graham.

Both candidates have linked the war in Iran to rising fuel and food prices that are affecting voters. Andrews argued that Graham voted to continue the conflict, which she said contributed to higher diesel costs, and called for lower gasoline prices. Graham, who succeeded her late brother Senator Lindsey Graham earlier this year, defended her record and received a public endorsement from President Trump, who said she would support the military and the administration’s priorities.

Republican Representative Nancy Mace and former Governor Sanford expressed frustration with the campaign dynamics, and Rep. Ralph Norman, who ran against Graham in the primary, declined to endorse her. An unnamed House Republican described the race as “embarrassing” for the party.

Analysts note that the contest reflects broader concerns among voters about war-related inflation and the perceived alignment of candidates with national security policies. The outcome will hinge on whether South Carolinians prioritize affordability and a resolution to the conflict in the coming weeks.
