Man injured after police shoot chainsaw attacker in Andhra Pradesh

Summary

A 21-year-old suspect who attacked two schoolgirls with a chainsaw in Anantapur was shot by police and is in critical condition, while the victims remain hospitalized.

Police in Anantapur district shot 21-year-old Hemanth after he resisted arrest and allegedly attacked officers with a knife, wounding a Circle Inspector. The suspect was hit with multiple rounds and transported to Government General Hospital, where doctors say he may require amputation of a leg due to severe injuries.

Hemanth had earlier used a chainsaw to assault two class-10 students on October 31. One 15-year-old girl suffered loss of her right hand and multiple facial and neck injuries, as well as fractures. She was first treated at the Anantapur hospital and then transferred via a green corridor to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru for extensive surgery and intensive care monitoring.

The second girl, who was injured while attempting to help her classmate, is also receiving medical care. Education Minister Nara Lokesh, who visited the hospital, said the surgeries on the first victim were completed and her condition was stable, though the next 48 hours would be critical.
