IDF Advances in Gaza City as Civilians Evacuate Southward
Israeli forces have intensified operations in Gaza City, prompting over half a million residents to evacuate southward, while Hamas reports civilian casualties from recent strikes.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have intensified their operations in Gaza City, leading to the evacuation of more than half a million residents to the southern regions of the Gaza Strip. IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin stated that the military is targeting Hamas strongholds within the city, engaging in combat both above and below ground.
Defrin emphasized that Israel is maintaining open corridors to facilitate the movement of civilians toward safer areas. He noted that approximately 550,000 people have relocated southward. The IDF has also coordinated with international organizations to provide humanitarian aid, including thousands of tents and supplies awaiting collection at the Kerem Shalom crossing. Defrin urged these organizations to distribute the aid directly to the people of Gaza.
The IDF has accused Hamas of obstructing evacuation efforts and exploiting civilians as human shields. Defrin alleged that Hamas has fired upon UN teams, used stolen UN vehicles to block aid routes, and seized UNICEF aid trucks at gunpoint, depriving infants of essential supplies. He asserted that Hamas's actions aim to prolong the conflict by exploiting its own population.
Hamas-controlled health authorities reported that recent Israeli strikes have resulted in over 40 deaths, including 19 women and children. These figures have not been independently verified and do not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
The conflict in Gaza escalated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants invaded southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken. Currently, 48 hostages remain in Hamas's custody. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry claims that over 65,000 people have been killed or are presumed dead since the fighting began, though these numbers cannot be independently confirmed and do not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel asserts that it has killed over 22,000 combatants in battle as of August and an additional 1,600 militants inside Israel during the initial onslaught.
Israel maintains that it seeks to minimize civilian casualties and accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields by operating from residential areas, including homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques.
