Attempted Murder Investigation Launched in France After Police Attack

Summary

French prosecutors are investigating an attempted murder after petrol bombs were thrown at police during protests, resulting in injuries to officers and widespread unrest.

Prosecutors in France have initiated an attempted murder investigation following an incident where petrol bombs were thrown at police during ongoing protests. An image of a police officer with his leg on fire during clashes in Paris has sparked outrage, highlighting the violence that has accompanied weeks of demonstrations.

The injured officer, who suffered burns and minor injuries, described the incendiary device as "particularly sophisticated." Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned the act, stating that throwing a Molotov cocktail at police constitutes a murder attempt, and emphasized that efforts are underway to identify those responsible.

On Saturday, hundreds of thousands participated in largely peaceful protests across France, part of a youth-led movement advocating for action on the high cost of living and inadequate public services. In response to previous clashes, thousands of police were deployed, and tear gas was used against demonstrators in some locations. The French interior ministry reported over 770 arrests, a decrease from the previous week.

Despite the arrests, police have not apprehended anyone for the attack that injured the officer. The officer, part of the National Gendarmerie, noted that his unit faced a well-equipped group of adversaries rather than typical protesters. He remarked on the heightened danger posed by the incendiary device used in the attack, which had a greater burning capacity than standard Molotov cocktails. Fourteen other officers were also injured during the protests, with some suffering serious wounds from projectiles.

Protest organizers, including the Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vests), have reported numerous serious injuries among demonstrators, attributed to police tactics. Following a serious incident involving a stun grenade earlier this month, France suspended the use of one type of grenade but reports suggest that other models have continued to be deployed during protests.
