Documentary and Comic Adaptation Compete for Box Office Lead
A24's documentary 'You Can See Everything' and DC's 'Clayface' are in a tight race for the top spot at the domestic box office, each projected to earn around $10.5 million over the weekend.
A24’s documentary 'You Can See Everything' is slightly ahead of DC’s comic book adaptation 'Clayface' in a competitive box office race, with estimates suggesting it will earn $10.6 million from 3,242 venues, while 'Clayface' is projected to bring in $10.4 million from 3,478 theaters. This marks 'You Can See Everything's' third weekend in theaters, and achieving the number one spot would be a notable accomplishment for a documentary running over three hours, according to Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak.
The overall box office performance this Halloween weekend has been sluggish, with total revenues around $60 million, a slight improvement from last year's $49 million. Dergarabedian noted that the holiday's timing on a Saturday likely diverted families from theaters to Halloween activities.
'You Can See Everything' has garnered $63.88 million domestically so far and is anticipated to become one of the most successful documentaries in recent years, having been produced for $7 million. In contrast, 'Clayface,' which has earned $44.1 million in North America and $83 million globally, is considered a modest success for DC, produced at a cost of $44 million.
In other box office news, Laika’s animated film 'Wildwood' secured third place with $7.5 million, while Black Bear’s romantic comedy 'Wicker' and Paramount’s 'Street Fighter' rounded out the top five with $4.1 million and $3.2 million, respectively. Meanwhile, Sony's 'Klara and the Sun' struggled in its second weekend, failing to report significant earnings after a disappointing opening. In limited release, 'The Only Living Pickpocket in New York' debuted with $1.7 million, and Netflix's 'La Bola Negra' added $418,000 from 38 theaters.
