Karen Bass Faces Tough Challenge in Los Angeles Mayoral Race
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is battling a strong challenge from progressive candidate Nithya Raman as affordability issues dominate the election landscape.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is confronting a significant challenge in her bid for re-election, facing off against Nithya Raman, a candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. As affordability becomes a central issue for voters, Bass is striving to maintain support among her base while addressing criticisms regarding her tenure.
Bass, who became the first Black woman to serve as mayor in Los Angeles, has noted a shift in public sentiment since her election, stating, "Every now and then we’re popular, but we go out of popularity very quickly." This sentiment reflects the growing frustration among voters, particularly as housing affordability continues to decline, with only 15% of households able to afford a median-priced home in the city.
A recent poll indicates that Bass has narrowed the gap in the race, moving from an 11-point deficit to a dead heat with Raman. However, she acknowledges that younger voters, who largely support Raman, are not predominantly Black, highlighting a demographic divide in the electorate. Bass expressed concern over the perceived racial insensitivity of some younger, progressive voters, stating, "I’ve been shocked at the racial insensitivity, shall I say, shocked."
Critics, including Melina Abdullah from Black Lives Matter, argue that Bass's administration has not effectively advanced the interests of Black communities, citing her support for increased police funding as a betrayal of the movement that initially brought her to power. Bass's campaign has emphasized her achievements in addressing homelessness and crime, but she faces ongoing scrutiny over her handling of these issues.
In a recent debate, Bass apologized for her absence during the Palisades fires, acknowledging the criticism she received for being out of the city during a crisis. She stated, "I am so profoundly sorry that I was not in my city when my city needed me."
As the election approaches, Bass is focusing on persuading voters that Raman poses a risk to the city, arguing that her experience and policies require more time to take full effect. She concluded, "It’s very hard to say that you want to be mayor of this city, and you’ve never heard of Rodney King."
