Michael Carrick to lead Manchester United against Roma despite recent losses
Michael Carrick will continue as Manchester United's manager for the upcoming Champions League match against Roma, following a series of poor performances.
Michael Carrick is set to remain in charge of Manchester United for the Champions League match against Roma at Old Trafford, despite the team's recent 2-0 defeat to Chelsea. This loss marks United's ninth consecutive game without a win and their worst start to a season since 1988. Carrick's position will be reassessed during the upcoming international break after the Premier League match against Aston Villa on Sunday.
The 45-year-old narrowly avoided losing his job last week after discussions between director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada. They concluded that Carrick should be given an opportunity to improve the team's performance. Currently, United sits in 17th place in the league, just above the relegation zone on goal difference.
Despite the challenging circumstances, there remains a belief within the club's hierarchy that Carrick can turn the situation around, with fans showing their support during the recent match. After the Chelsea game, Carrick expressed his determination to move forward, stating, "We’ve got to move forward and win matches, it’s as simple as that."
Should Carrick be dismissed, Eddie Howe is reportedly the preferred candidate for the role, with preliminary contact having been made. Additionally, Julian Nagelsmann, the former head coach of Germany and Bayern Munich, is also considered a strong candidate, having previously worked with United's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, at RB Leipzig.
