Lewis Hamilton Achieves First Ferrari Pole at Mexico City Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton secured his first pole position for Ferrari at the Mexico City Grand Prix, marking a significant milestone in his career as he aims to emulate Michael Schumacher.
Lewis Hamilton expressed his excitement after claiming his first pole position for Ferrari at the Mexico City Grand Prix, describing it as a realization of a childhood dream. The 41-year-old driver, who is now the oldest pole-sitter in Formula 1 since 1982, secured his 105th career pole by outperforming Mercedes' George Russell in a dramatic qualifying session.
Reflecting on the achievement, Hamilton stated, "To get the pole, finally get a pole for Ferrari, just takes me back to when I was a kid... It was a dream my family have shared with me." He emphasized that reaching this milestone feels as special as his first, despite the number of poles he has accumulated over his career.
Hamilton's former teammate, Jenson Button, noted Hamilton's confidence during the qualifying rounds, highlighting his smooth driving and ability to perform under pressure. Hamilton will start the race alongside Russell, with both drivers in contention to delay Kimi Antonelli's potential championship win.
As the race approaches, Hamilton acknowledged the challenges of maintaining his position at the start, particularly with the long run down to Turn 1. He remarked on the difficulty of overtaking at the high-altitude circuit, while Russell and Charles Leclerc also recognized the importance of the opening moments of the race. Hamilton aims to make his car as wide as possible to fend off challenges from behind as he prepares for the race ahead.
